Winter 🌟Holidays ⛄️

⛄️ Celebrate The Holidays!  ⛄️
#Christmas Ornaments from Holidays-Fetes
“Winter” holidays that are celebrated
around the world this time of year.
Here are 8 holidays that you probably have wondered about!

Hannukah, or festival of lights, begins December ??  and will continue for 8 days, where each night, another candle on a menorah will be lit. Prayers, small gifts, and fried food are enjoyed during this special time.
Fun Fact: the Dreidel, or Sevivon, was used to study the Land of Israel when it was illegal to study this under the Greek/Syrian rule.

Yule
Yule or Yuletide, is a German, Nordic, and Wiccan traditional holiday that is often similar to our modern pagan Christmas experience here in the U.S. It represents the dark half of the year succumbing to the light, or the Darkest Night. Famous commonalities of the Yule are the Yule Log, holly, mistletoe, evergreen wreaths, and pointsettias.

DōngzhΓ¬  冬至
Celebrated around December 22nd, this is another version of celebrating Winter Solstice among different Asian countries. This version of Solstice honors the relationship of Yin and Yang. Dumplings are often eaten on this day. Yum!

This is always marked on my calendar, but what on earth is this holiday for ?? Celebrated on December 26th in the U.K. and Ireland (among others), it is the Feast Day of St. Stephen, patron saint of horses. It is a time to acknowledge horse racing and fox hunting. Banks in these countries recognize it as a federal holiday. Although in the U.S., it is often viewed as a huge commercial day to return that ugly sweater your neighbor thought you might want and get a Keurig instead.

Celebrating its 51st anniversary, Kwanzaa, or “first fruits”, lasts from December 26th- January 1st. This holiday is celebrated among the African and African-American community to acknowledge family, friends, and all of the good things in life. This holiday was acknowledged during the Black Freedom Movement in the U.S. by Dr. Maulana Karenga, but has been around since the Egyptians!

Celebrated on December 10th 2017, is a non-religious, non-cultural day of recognition founded by the UN to honor the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This observance recognizes the goals and mission of the UN to meet political, civic, economic, social, and cultural needs of all human beings around the world.

Three Kings Day” celebrated on January 6th or on the Epiphany according to the Catholic Church. This is when the Wise Men came to visit the baby Jesus to present the gifts. In Spain, there are parades and adults often give children candies in shoes that they leave out. In other Hispanic cultures, pan dulce  or sweet bread is made with a plastic baby Jesus placed somewhere in the dough; should someone find the baby, they are obligated to bring bread for next year!

Although not celebrated until January 24th, 2018 (via Google), this holiday is celebrated by those belonging to the Buddhist faith. This is a religious observance of the Buddha’s enlightenment and awakening. This holiday is acknowledged in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Candles are lit for 30 days to acknowledge the enlightenment and rice and milk are often eaten on this day since it was the first meal the Buddha ate after his Enlightenment.

Christmas
Christmas is an annual holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. This is a festival that is marked by fun, frolic, reverence, celebrations, parties, family fun, catching up to make up your lost times, love, friendship, kids, Santa Claus and many more lovely feelings.
It is the time when the heart gives out delicious fragrances, the fireplace assumes primary importance, the homes goes through decorations makeover, the wardrobes stocking up on latest fashion. Christmas is celebrated across the globe, irrespective of religion, making it truly the greatest festival on Earth.

Manhattan❄️Winter Rinks

❄️   Manhattan Winter Rinks  ❄️
https://64.media.tumblr.com/6fdb806ef15712a226c8c4ef4efd1c6b/bb2e82f030f87ebe-de/s1280x1920/973a3e664388667d86fbe7146af77ef418d1d9f9.jpg

The Rink at Winter Village – Bryant Park
Where: Sixth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets
When: October 28 to March 4
Price: Free; skate rental $20
If you already own skates, this is the most affordable spot in the City—it's the only rink that offers free admission. Bryant Park also hosts annual holiday shops, a good destination if you want to cross some gifts off your list after your turn on the ice.
❄️
Lasker Rink
Where: Central Park, northeast corner, between 106th and 108th Streets
When: November 3 to March 18
Price: Adults $8.50, kids 12 and under $4.50; skate rental $7.50
Up in the northern reaches of Central Park, Lasker Rink is a bit less crowded than its sister venue, Wollman Rink (see below); you’ll also save a few bucks if you opt for this one.
❄️
The Rink at Brookfield Place
Where: 250 Vesey St., at North End Ave.
When: November to March (weather permitting)
Price: $15; skate rental $5
This is your best downtown bet for open-air ice-skating, scenically located right by the Hudson River in Battery Park City. Brookfield Place also offers ample dining and shopping options, so you can grab a bite and buy some holiday gifts, too.
❄️
The Rink at Rockefeller Center
Where: Between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and 49th and 50th Streets
When: October 7 to April
Price: Adults $25–$32, kids 10 and under $15; skate rental $12
Millions of visitors plan trips to the City every year just to catch a glimpse of skaters taking a spin on the ice below the famous Christmas tree and gilded statue of Prometheus; others will wait in long lines to experience it for themselves.
❄️
The Rink at the Standard, High Line
Where: Standard Hotel, 848 Washington St., at 13th St.
When: “When it’s consistently cold enough” (usually open from late November)
Price: Adults $13, kids $6; skate rental $4 (prices reflect those of last season)
This compact rink is open to the public, not just hotel guests, and provides a hip, scenic downtown setting for carving the ice. It stays open till late, so do some skating under the stars before retiring to one of the hotel bars for a nightcap.
❄️
Riverbank State Park Ice Rink
Where: Henry Hudson Parkway between West 138th and West 145th Streets
When: November to March
Price: Adults $5, kids 11 and under $3; skate rental $6
Riverbank, in Hamilton Heights, is the only state park in Manhattan; it offers incredible river views across to New Jersey, gorgeous vistas of the George Washington Bridge and a nicely tucked away place to glide on the ice.
❄️
Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers
Where: Pier 61, West 23rd Street and Hudson River Park
When: Year-round
Price: $11; skate rental $6
Want to skate downtown…in mid-July? This enormous rink at Chelsea Piers is the place to go, though it’s a reliable stop-off any time of year.
❄️
Wollman Rink in Central Park
Where: Central Park, mid-park between 62nd and 63rd Streets
When: October 23 to April
Price: Adults $12 (Mon.–Thurs.), $19 (Fri.–Sun.); kids 11 and under $6; skate rental $9
Few skating spots can match the ambience of Central Park’s Wollman Rink, especially after a fresh snowfall. If you’re there at night, be sure to look up for some prime NYC stargazing.

Re: Textile Recycling Bin
Dear Residents:
We are pleased to inform you that The Braender Condominium has enrolled with Department of Sanitation’s free textile recycling program, called “E- Fashion” which is administered in partnership with Housing Works.
The large bin is located in the basement. To access it, pass through the door opposite the elevator (to the right of the laundry room) and the bin is located on the right.
https://66.media.tumblr.com/db6bf33c55175378173bac897746f540/tumblr_ppe48gU7SX1t8wujro4_1280.jpg

Accepted items include:
• Clothing - women, men & children’s clothing
• Shoes & boots, purses, gloves, scarves, hats & belts
• Towels, curtains, bedding & linens
• Clean rags and torn clothing

Tear-off tax deduction receipts are available on the bin, and in the BuildingLink Library.   Accompanying this memo is the “E-fashion” flyer from the Dept. of Sanitation/Housing Works.

We hope you’ll find this a useful convenience, with a worthwhile cause.
Thank you.
 RefashionNYC!

The NYC Department of Sanitation offers additional recycling services for residential apartment buildings with 10 or more units.

e-cycleNYC (nyc.gov/ecycle) provides eligible buildings with free bins and pickup service for responsible recycling. As of January 2015, it is illegal to discard electronics in the trash.

Food scraps:
NYC Organics Collection (nyc.gov/organics) provides eligible buildings with curbside collection of residents’ food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste.

RE-FA: RE-FASHIONYC BROCHURE 2015.11

What is re-fashioNYC?
re-fashioNYC is a free and convenient clothing donation and recycling service available to apartment, office, and commercial buildings.
The service is provided by the NYC Department of Sanitation and Housing Works.
In contrast to for-profit used clothing companies that supply similar collection bins, re-fashioNYC is 100% nonprofit and charitable.

Why Join?
Help New Yorkers. All proceeds from donations support the charitable mission of Housing Works to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS.
Get tax deductions. Tax receipts for up to $250 are available directly on the bin.
Keep valuable materials from going to landfills. Every year NYC residents throw away approximately 200,000 tons of clothing, towels, blankets, curtains, shoes, handbags, belts, and other textiles and apparel. That’s nearly the weight of 900 Statues of Liberty!

How It Works
We will visit your building to discuss how many donation bins you want, what sizes are best, and where they should be placed.
The re-fashioNYC donation bin is offered in two sizes:
Small (2’ deep x 4’ wide x 6’ high) Large (3.5’ deep x 4’ wide x 6’ high)
When the bin is full, simply let us know by calling or emailing us. We will pick up the donations within five business days.

How to Enroll
To receive a re-fashioNYC bin in your apartment, office, or commercial building, complete an online inquiry form at nyc.gov/refashion.

What Happens to Donations?
Some donations are sold in Housing Works thrift shops throughout NYC, including the Buy-the-Bag store in Brooklyn.
Some items are donated to Haiti or sent to other nonprofit thrift shops.
The rest are sold to a textile merchant for recycling or exported to overseas markets.

No donations are sent to landfills!
Recycle More!

City Feeding NYers in Need as Incomes Stall During Pandemic By Spectrum News Staff New York City

PUBLISHED Apr. 07, 2020
NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced the city has helped provide more than 2.6 million meals to New Yorkers in need over the last three weeks.
The city is now expanding its free meals program, which was initially just for public school students, to cover any adult.
Seniors who have difficulty leaving their homes to pick up meals will be able to receive delivery service.
The mayor says there are now 435 meal pick up sites across the five boroughs.
If you need meals you can text FOOD or COMIDA
to 877-877 to find your nearest pick up site.
"We will not let any new yorker go hungry. Literally. We will not let any new yorker go hungry. we have been planning, since the beginning of this crisis, to address the hunger problem," De Blasio said.
The mayor also delivered a positive update on the coronavirus pandemic, saying the city's ventilator supply will now last through this week.
He says there's been a slight improvement in the number of patients hospitalized for the virus. But he cautioned that the city is not out of the woods just yet.
