City Feeding NYers in Need as Incomes Stall During Pandemic By Spectrum News Staff New York City

PUBLISHED Apr. 07, 2020
NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced the city has helped provide more than 2.6 million meals to New Yorkers in need over the last three weeks.
The city is now expanding its free meals program, which was initially just for public school students, to cover any adult.
Seniors who have difficulty leaving their homes to pick up meals will be able to receive delivery service.
The mayor says there are now 435 meal pick up sites across the five boroughs.
If you need meals you can text FOOD or COMIDA
to 877-877 to find your nearest pick up site.
"We will not let any new yorker go hungry. Literally. We will not let any new yorker go hungry. we have been planning, since the beginning of this crisis, to address the hunger problem," De Blasio said.
The mayor also delivered a positive update on the coronavirus pandemic, saying the city's ventilator supply will now last through this week.
He says there's been a slight improvement in the number of patients hospitalized for the virus. But he cautioned that the city is not out of the woods just yet.

NYC Layer-Lapse

NYC Layer-Lapse
Julian Tryba
1 Film,  22 Trips to New York,  352 Hours of filming,  $1,430 paid in Parking Fees,  9988 Miles Driven, and  232,000 Pictures Taken
Traditional time-lapses are constrained by the idea that there is a single universal clock. In the spirit of Einstein's relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene. Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse.
After releasing "Boston Layer-Lapse" a few years ago, I was able to quit my engineering job to focus on time-lapse and film making. New York City was the obvious subject for my next film, the immense skyline was ideal.
However I was facing an unknown creative challenge: when I created Boston Layer-Lapse I manually animated layers because I only had about 30 layers in a scene, in New York I was making layer-lapses with 100-300 layers so I needed some method to help me automate my workflow. Luckily I have an engineering background I can lean on, so in early 2016 I started learning scripting in after effects, and began writing code to create different layer-lapse 'looks'. To create a layer-lapse effect, I am assigning a unique equation to hundreds of buildings simultaneously.
For each frame, every building is calculating and deciding which time of day to reveal. One example of a script that yields a ‘look’ are the waves of day or night that move through some of the shots in this film. To achieve the ‘look’ I can set parameters like the speed at which the wave moves across the screen, how rapidly each layer will switch from day to night or vice versa, and I'll often use a random sinusoidal function to create a subtle oscillation inside the wave itself.
Now I've probably lost half my audience but for those of you still reading, the final step is linking an action or a script to a piece of the music. One way I've found this can be done is creating a set of audio triggers for a song, so that every note or beat triggers a change. By linking a certain script to each of these triggers one can create computer generated layer-lapses that are animated in response to music.
Admittedly, this film is still a combination of mathematical and manual animation but my goal is to create a layer-lapse film where all the animations are simply decisions made by each layer after analyzing the music and the script it was assigned. By making layer-lapses run on mathematics, there are also some really cool avenues to create interactive physical or virtual art installations where a person could actually touch and manipulate a layer-lapse scene in real time. The further down the rabbit hole of layer-lapses I go, the more opportunities for experimentation I am discovering.
I love the process of creative exploration and hopefully my audience gets something from it too, thanks for watching!

Day and Night Merge
Spectacular Timelapse of New York City
By Jessica Stewart on November 25, 2017

Ex-rocket scientist turned filmmaker Julian Tryba of Alinia Media is back with a new timelapse that combines math and art with stunning results. His NYC Layer-Lapse is a two-and-a-half-minute audiovisual symphony that shows us the iconic cityscape from a new dimension, as day and night are blended seamlessly together.

Tryba used his background in engineering to write code and create what he calls a layer-lapse. “In the spirit of Einstein’s relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene,” Tryba writes. “Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse.”

Each scene has 100 to 300 layers, with a unique equation assigned to every building. This equation helps decide at what time of day to show the architecture. Adding to the fun, audio triggers in the song set off changes, making the scene seemingly move to the beat of the soundtrack. Tryba is still perfecting the process and hopes in the future it can be used in physical or virtual art installations.

So just what is the breakdown in order to capture enough footage of New York to pull together the project? Tryba took 22 trips to New York for 352 hours of filming and over 200,000 photographs captured. That added up to almost 10,000 miles driven and $1,430 in parking fees to create the coolest view of New York we’ve seen in awhile.

NYC Skyline’s Transformation Since 9/11

NYC Skyline’s Transformation
Since 9/11
By Mollie Reilly
In the thirteen years since the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center, Lower Manhattan and the New York City skyline have undergone a remarkable transformation.

Five years after terrorists destroyed the iconic Twin Towers, developers began construction on One World Trade Center, the 104-story tower that is now the tallest building in the United States. The tower, which stands in the northwest corner of what was known as Ground Zero, officially opened this year.

Below, watch just how much the skyline has changed over the years.
